The Full Deal

We sat EW. Against three diamonds, West led a low trump, now a club to the King and West’s Ace, and West continued Ace of trumps and a trump. From this point, declarer twisted and turned but ended down two (six tricks for EW). Any plus score EW was 76% or better; our plus 100 was 93%. West’s initial pass worked out well; those who overcalled two diamonds played it there, typically going down three (taking the same six tricks on offense that we took on defense) or down four (West taking only five tricks). Those who doubled one spade sometimes pushed NS to four diamonds (good) but sometimes ended in four hearts doubled down one (scoring a not-bad 52%) or down two (scoring a very bad 4%). If hearts had been 2-2, it would have been possible to make ten tricks in hearts, but on this layout declarer has only nine tricks at best. Deal L069.
