Second Answer
You open one spade in third seat, LHO passes, and partner bids two clubs (Drury, promising three-plus spades and 10+ support points).

Are you strong enough to insist on game, strong enough to invite game, or not strong enough to invite game? You have a seven-loser hand, indicating a normal full opening bid. Partner, for the Drury bid, probably has three “cover cards”: seven losers in your hand minus three cover cards for partner = four losers, so we think the South cards are not strong enough to commit to game. Whether the South cards are strong enough to invite game is a separate question; partner passed as dealer, you need for partner to have about ten HCP in the major suits in order to have a good chance at ten tricks, and that’s just not likely. Another way of reaching the same conclusion is to realize that partner probably has only three spades, which means that probably there are two losers in the trump suit. We wouldn’t criticize a partner who invited, but we think that inviting game here stands to lose matchpoints in the long run.
Now suppose that, over partner’s Drury call, East (your RHO) bids three diamonds; does that change your mind?
