Bonus from Val: When it’s unlikely that the defenders will get any additional tricks in the side suits, often it’s best to force declarer or dummy to ruff (even giving a deliberate ruff-and-discard), hoping that this will give declarer a problem in the trump suit. This is an example of what we call Tricks With Trumps in Real World Bridge 9: Defense. At trick one, declarer does better to duck the King of spades; now the defense would be much more difficult.
