Quiz 123

The Full Deal

Our opponent West led a heart (the worst lead of all, on this layout), but declarer didn’t take full advantage, leading the Jack of spades; West took the Ace; then the defenders took the Ace and King of diamonds; then another spade won by North, who had to give West a trick with the Jack of trumps one way or another; down two (plus 200) was 79% for EW. Plus 100 would have been 33%.

Bonus from Val: Most lines of play and defense end with declarer being down two, but a heart lead gives declarer a chance to go down one (win the opening lead and cash a second heart, discarding a diamond from the North hand). Deal L017.
