Quiz 116

First Answer

You are 2nd seat, unfavorable. East (RHO) passes.

Should you open one spade or a strong two clubs?. You have “only” 19 HCP but your Losing Trick Count is a very exciting three. It wouldn’t be surprising if you took ten tricks in your own hand, so you certainly have enough offensive power to open two clubs. You have four “quick tricks” (normally enough to open two clubs) but your hand might take only two or three tricks on defense. Because you have 7-4 shape, it’s relatively unlikely that the auction might go one spade all pass, but it’s possible. You have spades, so you’re not afraid of competition. We (fearing one spade all pass) would open two clubs but would not criticize a partner who opened one spade.

Say that you open one spade, West doubles, partner passes, and East bids two clubs.
