It’s not important which defense you prefer, but it is important to play some defense in which, at a minimum, you can show both major suits.
We recommend playing the same defense in the pass-out seat (one notrump, pass, pass, ?) as in the direct seat.
It’s reasonable to play a different defense against “weak” notrump openings, but we don’t recommend that except for advanced pairs, and only then if (1) both players have excellent memories and (2) there is an agreement about exactly what “weak” means.
