In each of the following auction types, we recommend that the two notrump call be artificial, asking partner (the doubler) to bid three clubs:

In the first auction type, the doubler is in the direct seat. In the second auction type, the doubler is in the pass-out seat.
When using this method, the two notrump bidder has some sort of weak hand. Holding a weak hand with clubs, pass three clubs. Holding a weak hand with diamonds, correct three clubs to three diamonds. When the weak two bid was in spades, holding a weak hand with hearts, correct three clubs to three hearts.
When playing the Lebensohl 2NT Response, when the partner of the doubler bids three of a suit directly, it promises modest values (a typical guideline for “modest values” is “at least 8 HCP but not enough to bid game”).
This approach allows the partner of the doubler to differentiate between weak hands and hands with modest values. This makes it much easier and more accurate for the partnership to bid and make game after an opponent opens a weak two bid.
The trade-off is that the doubler’s partner cannot bid two notrump naturally (as an invitation toward three notrump). In our partnership, we use the Lebensohl 2NT Response when the weak two bid is in a major suit. However, when the weak two bid is in diamonds, in our partnership two notrump by the doubler’s partner is natural (inviting three notrump).
