Real World Bridge 5: Competitive Bidding Part Two

Balancing

In a “balancing” situation, the opponents have stopped bidding at a relatively low level, partner and RHO have passed, and you face a decision whether to compete further. These situations occur very frequently, and our research found that these types of decisions often swing lots of matchpoints.

We have found it very useful to consider HCP Around the Table, and The Law of Total Tricks, in these situations.

Also, when we have the chance to declare at the two level with an eight- or nine-card fit, we expect a matchpoint score in the 60% to 70% range, in the long run. Accordingly, we are willing to accept a lot of risk, so as not to allow the opponents to declare in that situation. In a large online Open Pairs game, our opponent South made the losing choice:

Quiz 4.01. You are South (4th seat, unfavorable).
